Windows 7:

What, Why and How?

Windows 7 is a new addition to the operating system developed by Microsoft, as Windows Vista was proving to have poor performance and harder requirements to run the system. Windows 7 is going to eventually replace the Vista and XP as it has become quite popular in the market.

So why upgrade to Windows 7?

Windows 7 is found to be more stable and offer better performance and has a much better interface to work with. If you are a Vista user, you will notice the difference in performance as soon as you upgrade to Windows.

Features included in Windows 7 includes Aero Shake, Slideshow desktop wallpaper, pinned application, Jump List, and plenty more, about which you can have a detailed read at the following website:

A flip side of changing to Windows 7 exists, but can be easily overcome by using other applications.  For instance, there is no email client support like Outlook Express or Windows Mail, but you could obtain MS Outlook, or download a free copy of Mozilla Thunderbird, and start sending and receiving emails. There is also no more parental control or Windows Movie maker or Photo gallery, which Vista did offer. In most cases you can use a third party application to get very similar results if not better.

There are three different flavours of Windows 7:  Windows 7 Home, Windows 7 Business and Windows 7 Ultimate. They all come in two different technologies: 32 bit or 64 bit. Because CPUs of today are designed on 64 bit technology it’s better to use a 64 bit operating system to take full advantage of power and performance. However, if there are specific programs that you are running that do not support 64 bit operating system, then you are better off with 32 bit operating system.

Before you upgrade you need to download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser which tells you whether your current system, including printer, scanner and even your applications will support Windows 7. This program is free to download from Microsoft.

Installing the Windows 7 is easy. You can either upgrade, which basically means retaining all the information like your pictures, emails or documents and some programs without reinstalling it, or completely install the new program starting fresh. This option is great for new computers that you have not yet saved any of your personal information on.  It is however always best to check with your retailer before doing the process.
